2022-09-15

On September 6, NZUWI held the opening ceremony for 2022 freshmen. More than 200 freshmen gathered here to open a new chapter to seek knowledge and talent. Professor Luo Weidong, President of ZUCC, attended the ceremony and delivered a speech. Alister Jones, Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor of Waikato University, recorded a video to send blessings from afar. Directors from ZUCC different officess, i.g. ZUCC Admin Office, International Relations Office, Student Affairs Office, Academic Affairs Office, and the School of Business, the School of International Culture and Tourism, the School of Media & Humanities, the School of Art and Archaeology, and all faculty members of NZUWI attended the ceremony.

President Luo Weidong pointed out that, at present, we are in an era of rapid development of globalization. As a member of this International institute, every student has a special mission: how to better serve the construction of one human community with a shared future. For NZUWI, it aspires to train not only patriots but also world citizens with common human values. Through higher education, I hope that every student will be more humane, which means the most basic empathy as a "person" and the ability to transpositional consideration. This is the long-standing "world view" of the Chinese nation and the requirement of a community with a shared future for mankind.

What we look forward to is that students still have transcendental empathy when they go to a wider world and meet different people. Through education and practice, students can enrich their moral senses, and no matter how complicated the situation is, they can still retain the most essential nature of human beings. Learn from others' strong points, learn to contact and constantly communicate with different groups in as many aspects as possible. As "pioneers", students will live up to the expectations of the two universities.

"Coming to NZUWI to study means that you will receive international education and the full support of high-quality teaching teams." President Alister Jones showed his welcome to the new students. "At the same time, joining the United College also means joining the alumni network of about 100000 people around the world." I wish you all success in your studies and everything smooth in the new school year.”

Associate prof., Shirley (He Min) ,the Executive Vice Dean, introduced the basic situation of NZUWI to all freshmen and expressed sincere appreciation to the foreign teachers who overcame the objective difficulties brought by the epidemic and came from afar. She wishes students should seize the opportunity to deeply think about the people whom they will become in the new stage of life, have great aims, absorb knowledge, study hard, and persevere. Finally, she encourages students pursue their dreams and enjoy their college life in the following 4 years.

Associate Dean Academic, Dr. Clemens Richter shows his welcome to the new students. "It gathers Chinese and western higher education resources and provides multiple academic perspectives. Here, you can explore yourself, discover your strengths and interests, and constantly expand your horizons in the professional field." At the same time, in this important chapter of life, a student will encounter many challenges. Dr. Clemens Richter encourages students to actively seek help from teachers when encountering problems, always keep curiosity, learn spontaneously and independently, and have the enthusiasm and courage to explore new things every day.

Mr. Frank Dadabo, the director of the English Foundation Program, congratulated the students on entering the university campus after intense learning in high school and put forward three suggestions for learning. First, managing your time effectively. Everyone is the "first responsible person" for time management. He hopes that all students can resist temptation and be responsible for themselves. Second, master technology, but don't indulge in it. Make science and technology a tool for your use and as a tool for learning and communication. The third is to recognize that learning is a long journey, and we need to study hard from today on. Recognize that scores and GPAs, reflect the understanding of knowledge. The ultimate goal of learning is to acquire knowledge and truly understand knowledge. Students should pay more attention to learning.

Mentors send their warm welcome to their students, looking forward to the students' grand plans in the new chapter of life.
